Empowering the Next Generation – The City Tutors and Volunteering Untapped Host Mentorship Event at Henry Street Settlement
In November 2024, The City Tutors and Volunteering Untapped co-hosted a mentorship event titled “What Do You Need to Know to Succeed in the Workplace?” at Henry Street Settlement in the Lower East Side. The gathering brought together approximately 50 students and professionals from sectors including technology, consulting, and government for an afternoon focused on career insights and networking.
Participants included students from various CUNY community colleges, senior colleges, professional schools, and other institutions. Many attendees were affiliated with programs such as SEEK, ASAP, ACE, America Needs You (ANY), COOP Careers, and Upwardly Global, all dedicated to enhancing career readiness and professional development.
Industry Insights from Leading Organizations
Students had the opportunity to engage with mentors from esteemed organizations:
Technology: Professionals from LinkedIn and Databricks discussed careers in tech and data-driven roles.
Consulting: Representatives from Accenture and BCG X shared insights into consulting career paths.
Government: A Federal Reserve representative provided perspectives on public service and economic policy careers.
Building Confidence and Connections
The event facilitated meaningful conversations, helping students gain clarity on their career aspirations and build connections with mentors and peers. One volunteer mentor noted:
It was a blast talking with students and young professionals about their goals and working together to help them get closer to achieving them. The other mentors were awesome to get to know, and they’re such a great group to learn from, volunteer with, and just have fun alongside.
Garri Rivkin, Executive Director of The City Tutors, commented:
Collaborations like this allow us to introduce mentors from outside our usual network, providing students with fresh perspectives and insights into diverse industries.
Erin Wurtemberger, co-founder of Volunteering Untapped NYC, added:
We’re always grateful to work with The City Tutors; the mentees are engaged, eager, and accomplished themselves. We could not ask for a better partner or participants than we have found in The City Tutors.
We extend our gratitude to Henry Street Settlement and Volunteering Untapped for their roles in making this event possible. We look forward to continuing our mission of creating pathways to success for NYC’s future leaders.
